The Essence of Customer Avatar, Targeting Center!

Hello, Excuse Me! Let me introduce myself, I’m Krishnaraja CH, Digital Marketer professional cum consultant. If you are a marketer like myself, you know it’s difficult to market to everybody. In this case, your role as a digital marketer is to recognize who those customers are, and market them directly. The best way to start is to build a customer avatar that reflects just your ideal customer.

Umm, what the heck is a customer avatar?

A customer avatar is a crafted representation of who your dream or ideal customer is. You may learn that it’s narrower than the target market. The target market is the entire community that you always need to cater to, but the user is your customer avatar. since you actually refer to a single person even though you’re selling to a wide audience. You need to dive deep into who needs your product or service specifically.

You need to research, analyze based on your experiences and get input from others. Note, it’s not just your customer avatar that you want them to be, it’s just who they really are. Knowing your customer avatar will actually influence your marketing decisions.

So the first thing you need to do is learn how to create my ideal customer avatar.

There are some different questions i look forward to asking myself when putting my customer avatar together. Like,

  • Who are they?
  • Where do they live?
  • What do they do?
  • How much do they make?
  • What is their problem and how can you fix it?

Learn → Do → Teach

Deepak’s, “The Golden Triangle” is what I have been applying to my life, Learn > Do > Teach. The best way to understand something is to learn from all opportunities first, then apply it and then teach it.

Some more essence of customer avatar before defining it,

  • When you write content for your ideal customer avatar, think of the one person you’re addressing.
    Always be authentic to communicate better.
  • if you design Email Marketing, then Tell them by name to add a personal touch. Email Marketing helps you to facilitate one-to-one communication.
  • Join people where they’re on their emotional path. Identify their problem, be part of it, and take action.
  • Write content that follows with: Headline > First Sentence > Second > Third > Fourth. Let your sentences go supportive to the other. Always write a KICKASS headline.
  • Focus on the center of your audience, not the border.
  • Awkwardness is an indicator of learning.

How to Define Your Ideal Customer Avatar?

When defining your ideal customer avatar, you need to think in the following ways,

  1. Demographic: as the name suggests, characteristics such as age, sex, marital status, city of residence, education, etc. come under this category.
  2. Psychographics: used in both consumer segmentation and ads. Some types of psychographic variables used in the segmentation of the market include:
    1. Activity, Interest, Opinion (AIOs).
    2. Attitudes.
    3. Values.
    4. Behavior.

Demographic characteristics will get you the answer to who & where are your target audience. Where in Psychographic characteristics, will get you the answer to what interests your target audience to attract.

So i decided to generate my ideal customer avatar, some ways of getting it done are,

  • Historical Data: Turn to Google Analytics, Facebook, LinkedIn, Hubspot, Twitter, or whatever site you’re on. Nearly every platform provides basic analytical and demographic information. Look at the difference between males and females, how old they are, what country they come from, what language they speak, etc.
  • Survey: This is also one of the better ways in which we can collect information from your existing customers or from a new customer, Family members, Friends, so on.
  • Interviews with users: When you build your marketing strategy, initiate and develop a ‘mental dialog’ with your “Customer Avatar”. Mentally communicate with them on a personal level, and speak to them like you would speak to a friend.
  • Imaginary: Imagine your target audience, If you combined all of your customers into one customer, what would they be like? What are the commonalities of all of your customers? Who are they? Hey, how old are they? Is that male or female?

Conclusion:

A customer avatar should be a central part of your marketing strategy. It provides a framework for targeting and helps every user to understand exactly who you’re trying to attract. Marketing strategies that already know the nature of their target market would often take less money and time and will have more ROI.
